Why Sales?

When you think of the phrase ‘graduate level jobs’, sales might not immediately spring to mind.  Working in sales is, however, a challenging career, and one which can be rewarding both in terms of job satisfaction and annual income.  If you’ve recently graduated or will be soon, then it is well worth considering a sales career.

Why Sales if You Have a Degree?

It doesn’t matter what course you took at university, you will have picked up skills which are required for a job in sales and you’re bound to find a role which interests you and plays to your skillset.  Whether you recognise it or not, university will have strengthened your communication skills, your ability to think critically and your ability to work and think as part of a team – all talents which are vital for selling.  Sales require the personal touch and someone who can think quickly, and those are characteristics which you’ll have developed during your studies.

Sales careers can be just as challenging and ‘high-powered’ as a career as a barrister, engineer or space scientist.  Find the right vacancy and you can set yourself on the path to a large annual salary and great career progression, with some of the wealthiest people on the planet having started out in sales.  Warren Buffett, Richard Branson, Marissa Mayer and Howard Schultz all started out their working lives ‘on the shop floor’ and it hasn’t done their careers or wallets any harm.

What Sort of Roles are out There?

Think ‘sales’ and you might think of the person behind the till in your local coffee shop or the uniformed worker in a department store.  In fact, there’s more to sales than immediately meets the eye, and this is one of the most diverse industries you could work in.  There are, of course, those direct selling jobs which you encounter day to day, but there’s more going on behind the scenes.  Every company has something to sell and a brand to create, so demand is high and there are always sales jobs out there.

You could consider recruitment, for instance, matching job seekers to their perfect role.  There are company account managers who manage the trading relationships between their organisation and another.  There are also business development executives who are tasked with building partnerships and cultivating trade between companies.  These all fall under the catch-all term ‘sales’, and most will require someone with a degree and a good business mind.

What are the Perks?

Many companies will go out of their way to keep their best salespeople on board.  On top of a nice base salary, you might also find you can earn bonuses and commission for selling well.  That could see you earning a very healthy annual income, easily comparable to those jobs which are promoted as ‘graduate level’.

This is also a great field to work in if you like social interaction and enjoy talking to people.  Selling is, after all, about building relationships and the human touch.

Finally, you’re almost guaranteed to find a job suited to you.  Every company needs salespeople, so demand is high and new jobs always come available.  Find the right sales role for you, and you could be about to embark on a very exciting career.
