Graduate Advantage reduces recruitment costs for small businesses in the West Midlands

Guy McEvoy, Managing Director of GuyKat Solutions with Hannah Quinton their graduate intern

With increased calls to cut employment red tape to enable small businesses to take on more staff to reduce unemployment, Graduate Advantage (GA) an internship finding service based at Aston University, is offering a cost-saving solution.

Small businesses within the West Midlands have the opportunity to reduce the time they spend on recruitment, and can save up to £400 in Employer’s National Insurance costs through GA’s free Payroll & HR Services.

Research from the British Chambers of Commerce has revealed that of 60% of 2,000 small businesses surveyed wanted to take on more employees but legislation was stopping them from doing so.*

Through GA businesses can source fresh and enthusiastic graduate talent for a short term project or role without incurring advertising and recruitment fees, as well as reducing the time they have to spend on search and selection.

One company that is benefiting from the Payroll Service is GuyKat Solutions based at Birmingham Science Park who recruited Hannah Quinton, a History graduate, on a 3 month eLearning internship. The Payroll Service supports GuyKat for the first 12 weeks of the internship by paying the intern’s salary. The employer then contributes the gross salary minus the employer National Insurance to the GA project. “Employment law is scary to small business. It feels too risky to take new folk on. This scheme reduces that risk, saves the business money in both recruitment costs and NI, and has allowed us give someone paid work and a genuine chance,” said Guy McEvoy, Managing Director of GuyKat.

Clara Wilcox, Project Manager at Graduate Advantage added “The uptake on the Payroll Service has been positive and many companies are benefiting. By offering this service GA are not only encouraging economic growth but giving businesses the opportunity to gain graduate skills and expertise.”

Funded and supported by West Midlands’ universities, Graduate Advantage is a unique one stop shop for businesses to find their perfect intern. Graduate Advantage is based at Aston University and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

*British Chamber of Commerce Workforce Survey published on 3 October 2011 revealed the barriers for growth for small firms. Their report revealed that small businesses (those with between 10-49 employees) want to grow, but their ambitions are frustrated by too much red tape.
In a survey of over 2,000 small businesses, almost two thirds (60%) wanted to take on more employees. However, their ambitions to grow are often severely frustrated by the difficulties of complying with employment regulation.

Graduate Advantage highlights the importance of spelling and grammar for graduates

With World Spelling Day fast approaching on Tuesday, 6th March, the emphasis on good spelling and grammar has never been more crucial. Graduate Advantage, an internship finding service based at Aston University, has been scouring CVs to highlight the importance of spelling and grammar when applying for jobs.

A recent survey conducted by Learndirect showed that 40% of jobseekers say poor spelling is the area they have been criticised for the most in previous jobs, whilst 56% of employers rate proficiency in English as a top priority when recruiting.

Students and graduates can help their job-hunting efforts by focusing on their spelling and grammar in applications. At a time when one in every eleven* young people (aged 18-24) is currently out of work and claiming Job Seekers Allowance within the West Midlands region, good spelling and grammar have never been more important in improving job prospects.

Graduate Advantage has identified the top mistakes being made by graduates on CVs and application forms:

• Lower case i instead of I, when describing yourself
• There and their are interchanged
• Commonly misspelt words include: internship, receive, university and business
• Using American spellings (for example, organization)
• Misuse of commas, colons and semi-colons
• Text talk and definitely no LOL as well as emoticons

Julie Stonall, Internship Manager at Graduate Advantage commented: “In this competitive job market making the right first impression is crucial for graduates. The Graduate Advantage team sees thousands of CVs and job applications every year from graduates looking to begin their careers within the West Midlands and repeatedly see graduates making the same common spelling errors on their internship applications. These mistakes can be easily avoided. Whilst the majority are very good, many CVs, covering letters and job applications can be improved significantly by taking time over an application, reading it through a number of times and most importantly, checking both spelling and grammar.”

Funded and supported by West Midlands’ universities, Graduate Advantage is a unique one stop shop for businesses to find their perfect intern. Graduate Advantage is based at Aston University and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The West Midlands is the only region in England to have this kind of service.

The Job Search; Presenting Yourself Online

Here at Graduate Advantage, we repeatedly see job seekers making the same common mistakes on their journey to employment. All these oversights can be easily avoided when you know how.

In 2011, 91% of companies used social media sites for recruitment purposes*. Your online identity speaks volumes to future employers, so it’s imperative that your web presence reflects the best of your character and capabilities. Most employers use social networking sites to research potential candidates, and 69% have rejected applicants because of information found online*.

Making a good ‘virtual-impression’ is vital, but seeking work on the web is only beneficial when you stand out from the crowd as a candidate who is innovative and creative. Due to the large volume of job seekers, your chances of landing a good position will be greatly enhanced if you match your skills to specific employers’ needs, and connect with key players. Seeking a position online allows you the opportunity to research sectors, specific roles and the skills required for each. It might seem like a daunting task, but you can put yourself ahead by being the first to hear about job opportunities, recruitment fairs and training.

There are a few pitfalls to seeking employment online. It’s easy to give the wrong impression of yourself, a problem that can be easily solved by using tight Facebook security settings and fleshing out your profile on LinkedIn. Make sure that the digital profile you show to the world is reflective of your good character and specific skill set.

You might wonder how it is that employers can glean so much from your online presence, but it is easy to forget to upgrade Facebook security settings, allowing future employers to see what kinds of things you post, who you associate with, and how you present yourself.

LinkedIn offers some useful advice for graduate job seekers. Join the LinkedIn groups belonging to recruitment agencies in your sector. Participate in the discussions; they’re filled with practical questions and advice. This is a great space to connect with key recruiters and build relationships.

Twitter suggests its users create a professional account, and put their job pitch into their Twitter bio and include a link to an online CV. Tweet about your job search, and follow recruiters and industry newspapers. If you’re interested in one or more specific companies, Tweet, Retweet, mention and tag them.

Don’t forget, graduates are great for business! Employers want to find you; you just have to make it easy for them.

*Social media monitoring service Reppler has found that 91% of employers use social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to screen job applicants – with 69% rejecting a candidate based on something they saw.
